Vestrahorn:
WOW. Just WOW. One of our favorite places in all of Iceland. Vestrahorn is a short ~20 min drive from Hofn. You’ll take a right off of the main road just before the tunnel onto a dirt road. There is a parking lot near the mountain, however it is private land and you need to pay to park. We arrived at sunrise and were some of the only people here, making for some stunning photos.
Definitely plan for some flexibility in order to visit Vestrahorn at sunrise or sunset, depending on weather and lighting conditions. We had though about coming the evening before for sunset, but the weather wasn’t great. It’s such a beautiful and unique mountain!
Drive to Hallormsstadur:
After spending a few hours at Vestrahorn, and grabbing lunch back in Hofn at Otto (highly recommend!), we decided to make our way on to Hallormsstadur. We did not visit the East Fjords, and took somewhat of a shortcut to Hallormsstadur because of this. This was one of our longer driving days of the trip, as it’s nearly 3 hours North.
As you drive North from Hofn, you will take a left onto dirt road 939. The road is in pretty good condition and we had no problem driving in our sedan. However, you will go over a pretty steep mountain pass. The pass ended up being extremely foggy which made for a pretty scary 30-45 minutes, driving slowly to make sure we stayed on the road. Luckily we left a little extra time before the sun set, as I can’t imagine doing this drive at night with the fog. Definitely allow for some wiggle room on this leg, as it can be a little sketchy.
We arrived at Hotel Hallormsstadur shortly before sunset and it was by far one of the nicest hotels of our trip! It also ended up being one of the cheaper hotels and it included an amazing breakfast. For being in such a remote area, we’d highly recommend staying here!
