Landbrotalaug Hot Springs
Iceland is home to some of the world's best natural hot springs and the Landbrotalaug Hot Springs on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula some of the most hidden and off the track Icelandic hot springs we visited.
Most of Iceland’s main tourist destinations are easy to access, visibly marked and well maintained! We were so surprised by how easy it was to travel in Iceland on our Blog Post: 10 Day Iceland Itinerary around Ring Road.
The Landbrotalaug Hot Springs, however, are not easy to find! Although these natural hot springs are located right off of Route 54, and 95 minutes North of Reykjavik, there is no sign, and if you search for Landbrotalaug Hot Springs on Google Maps it will not pull up the correct location!
Because the Landbrotalaug Hot Springs are hidden and more difficult to find, it meant we had the entire place to ourselves and they ended up being our favorite hot pots of our entire trip around Iceland! And spoiler the Landbrotalaug Hot Springs is actually TWO hot springs!
How to get to the Landbrotalaug Hot Springs
Coordinates: N64°49.933 W22°19.110 (copy and paste in to Google Maps)
The Landbrotalaug Hot Springs are North of Reykavik and just off the main Route 54 on the way to the incredibly beautiful Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Simply plug in the coordinates above in Google Maps and you will navigate right there! There is a small dirt road off of Route 54 which you will turn off on to, but it is well maintained and easily accessible in a two wheel drive car.
As you near the hot springs, there is a small parking lot with room for 5-10 vehicles. We were lucky and had the entire place to ourselves! The walk to the hot springs is not very far, but with all of the dirt and stones, we wore boots and brought our rain jackets to protect our clothes from the drizzle as we soaked in the warm water.
There are actually TWO hot springs in the area! Directly in front of the parking lot is a smaller plunge pool with room for one, and maybe two, people. To the left, is a larger pool, which you can spot by a large pipe coming out of the ground carrying the geothermal heated water. We found this larger pool to have warmer water, and more room for relaxing and lounging.
There is nothing better than lounging in Icelandic hot springs on cold rainy days after hiking. We traveled counter-clockwise around Iceland on our 10 day trip around Ring Road, so our time exploring the Snaefellsnes Peninsula came towards the end of our time in Iceland. Honestly, after hiking to waterfalls, countless sunrises and sunsets, we were more than ready to kick back and relax on our second to last day.
With so much geothermal activity in Iceland due to the numerous volcanoes, there are tons of hot springs to choose from. We are very picky about our hot pots and aimed to find the ones with the warmest water! The Landbrotalaug Hot Springs were some of the warmest we found. We also highly recommend the Reykjadalur Hot Spring Thermal River, just Southeast of Reykjavik, and a short 2 mile hike up to the thermal river.
